Five routines that make dinner calmer within a week

Same seat, same plate, same time. Familiar staging removes a set of decisions that a tired child does not have capacity for.

Give a five-minute warning before the meal. Transitions, not food, are often the actual trigger for a difficult dinner.

Serve components separately. A divided plate is not fussy — it is a way of making each item a separate, optional decision.

Always include one guaranteed accepted item. Knowing something safe is present makes a child far more likely to look at the rest of the plate.

End the meal on time regardless of how much was eaten, without commentary. Pressure and praise both make food feel like a test.
